Mary Stuart's daytime career began in 1951 when Search for Tomorrow debuted. Stuart played the role of Joanne Gardner until the series was cancelled in 1986. In 1988, Stuart made a brief appearance on One Life to Live as a judge. Stuart returned to daytime in 1996 as Meta Bauer on Guiding Light and played the role to her death in 2002 from stroke complications.

Stuart was married to Wolfgang Neumann (1986-2002; her death), Richard Krolik (1951-1966) and they had two children: Cynthia (b. 1955) and Jeffrey (b. 1956), and Michael Anthony (1946-1948).
