Irna Phillips is often credited as helping create the genre of daytime television. Phillips creations began on radio in the 1930's. Phillips was known to have a heavy hand in all aspects of her shows. In 1952, Phillips moved Guiding Light to television while also still doing radio shows. Phillips created As the World Turns in 1956. Phillips served as mentor to William J. Bell and they co-created Another World when it debuted in 1964. Phillips was also mentor to Agnes Nixon who worked under Phillips as a writer. Phillips had a hand in co-creating Days of our Lives in 1965 having worked with Ted Corday at both GL and ATWT. Phillips passed away on December 23, 1973 of undisclosed causes.

Phillips never married but adopted two children: Thomas Dirk and Katherine Louise.
