Maurice Benard's career in daytime started in 1987 when he joined All My Children as Nico Kelly, a role he played until 1990. In 1993, Benard joined General Hospital as Sonny Corinthos. Benard left GH in 1997 but after making a return guest appearance in 1998 he would return full time later that same year.

Benard has been married to Paula Smith since 08/11/1990. They have four children: Cailey Sophia (b. 09/18/1994), Cassidy Rose (b. 04/08/1999), Joshua James (b. 12/05/2004) and Heather Ann (adopted 2008).
